The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Audu Ogbe has commissioned a 30 Metric Tonne per day processing plant established by GB foods in Kaduna State.The pilot farm grows over 15 different varieties of tomato with an average yield of 40-50 MT/ha.Speaking during the event, Hon.
Ogbeh reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to encouraging local production and processing of tomato.He revealed that a ban on the importation of tomato paste is underway, as this would encourage local farmers in tomato paste production.
He also added that Nigeria is targeting self-sufficiency in tomato paste production by the next two years. GB Foods is a multinational food company with products in Spain, Italy, Russia and 30 countries in Africa and Asia. They are also the parent company of Gino brand, Bama mayonnaise, and the Jago brand. The processing plant is said to be worth over N2 billion.
