Sixteen Great Poems of Ifa  by Wande Abimbola

When Poetry Begins on the Back Stoop

There was a day when trials, pain and that raw hurt would shake you to the core of your very being. Then, you would hear this song playing on the wind, languishing with incense from the apartment building next door on that summer day. That is the day you would remember just how strong you really are from the love of your ancestors, your Mama who worked hard every day, making your life better than hers.
Knowing that you came from better stock because you had the faith of your people and you knew what this man was singing about! Ase! Having spiritual sight internally; to see something greater than the corner of the hood but looking above and within and then finding you-know who you really are. You are something greater than you have imagined and you are stronger than you think you are.
You are a spiritual being in a place where junkies are Kings. And you knew that someday you would stand with your words and your songs-Alone. You came from a dream of man and woman whose backs were raw from whips and chains no long visible but still walking by faith.
It is this legacy that is your power and your Truth.
