Maize To Add ₦200 Billion To GDP

In accordance with FG’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda, it’s been projected that maize production will add over ₦200 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr Akinwumi Adesina stated that to make this happen, the  government has commissioned 100,000 metric tons silos at strategic places in the Nation for maize and other grains.

“Production figures show a steady increase in maize production from 7.4 million metric tons in 2009 to the current 10.3 million metric tons in 2013. Production figure for 2014 is estimated at over 12 million metric tons, about 14 million if you include quantity consumed as green maize.”

Adesina added,
“With the wide range of uses of maize in Nigeria for both domestic and industrial uses for flour mills, breweries, confectioneries and animal feed manufacturers, maize is expected to contribute about ₦200 billion to the GDP of the nation.”

The Agricultural Transformation Agenda under the current administration on the path of food self-sufficiency and steady economic growth.
