🍡 Don’t Eat The First Marshmallow: Your Bigger Reward May Be Waiting

There is something called the Marshmallow Test. What is it? Years ago, researchers sat little children down, one at a time, with a single marshmallow in front of them. They gave each child a simple choice: eat this marshmallow now… or wait 15 minutes and get TWO marshmallows instead. Some children couldn’t resist as they grabbed it immediately. Others fidgeted, struggled, covered their eyes, sat on their hands… but they waited.

Years later, when researchers followed up on these same children as adults, something powerful showed up: the ones who learned to wait, who could delay that small gratification for a bigger reward, tended to go further in life, had better grades, better careers, better relationships, better outcomes, over and over again. That marshmallow wasn’t really about candy. It was about a life skill: the ability to say “not yet” to something small now, so you can have something so much bigger later. I think about this. How many times have we grabbed the “one marshmallow now” in life? Like the quick money instead of the long-term investment. The shortcut instead of the process.

The instant applause instead of the quiet years of building something that lasts. Real and lasting success often looks like discipline in the waiting room. It looks like sacrificing comfort today for a stronger tomorrow. The reality is waiting is hard, and watching others enjoy their “one marshmallow” while you’re still sitting with empty hands can feel unfair. But some of the sweetest rewards in life belong to the ones who learned to wait well.

So today, I just want to encourage someone reading this: “Whatever you’re patiently working toward whether business, dream, vision… just don’t grab the one marshmallow. Two are coming; hold on. Patience is a VIRTUE. That said… You are a leader; remember to make things happen!
