A Call for Peace and Urgent Intervention in Religious Tensions in Abeokuta, Ogun State

It is with deep concern and a heavy heart that I address a disturbing and unfortunate development currently unfolding in the Abeokuta area of Ogun State. Over the past week, there have been reports of rising tensions and attacks allegedly carried out by certain Islamic organizations against traditional worshipers in the region. This situation, if not addressed urgently, risks escalating into a full-blown religious conflict, threatening the longstanding peace and coexistence that Abeokuta and its surrounding communities have enjoyed.

Islam, like all major religions, is fundamentally a religion of peace. The word Islam itself derives from the Arabic word Salaam, meaning peace. True Islamic teachings promote compassion, justice, and respect for human dignity. However, it is deeply troubling that none of the so-called Islamic scholars or Sheikhs have publicly condemned the ongoing aggression being directed at traditional worshipers. The silence of these religious leaders, at a time when their voices are most needed, is both unfortunate and disappointing.

It is important to note that, according to findings and complaints from affected traditional worshipers, these individuals were peacefully practicing their religion without disturbing the public when they were allegedly attacked. These actions constitute not only a violation of their constitutional rights but also a direct threat to the principle of religious freedom, which is enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution.

One must also consider the possible consequences if this situation escalates. If traditional worshipers, in a bid to defend themselves, were to retaliate by attacking mosques or engaging in acts of violence, the same individuals and groups who are currently silent would likely flood social media with outrage and condemnation. This double standard is both unfair and unjust.

It is equally disappointing that the Nigerian Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, and other security agencies have remained silent and inactive despite these reports. Their delay in taking decisive action could embolden the aggressors and send a dangerous message that religious intolerance is acceptable or tolerated. Security agencies must remember their oath to protect all Nigerians—regardless of religious affiliation.
As a concerned citizen, I, Prince Amb (Dr.) Adedipe Dauda Adegeshin Ewenla, am hereby calling on all relevant security agencies and the leadership of Ogun State to intervene immediately. The situation must be brought under control before it deteriorates further.

Abeokuta is known for its cultural richness and religious diversity. It is a land where traditional worshipers form a significant part of the population and have historically practiced their beliefs peacefully and respectfully. The peace and stability of the region must not be jeopardized by the actions of a few.

Let this be a call to reason, justice, and urgent action. We must all work together to ensure that Abeokuta and Nigeria at large remain a place where people of all faiths can coexist peacefully and practice their religions without fear of harassment or attack.

Political Correctness: “Idol worship” fast growing in Anambra, says Soludo

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has said “idolatry” is fast growing in the state, especially among the youths. Referring to the culture and tradition of his forefathers as an “idol”, – a defamatory statement against the culture and tradition of the people. Not only that but also a double standard way of looking at it. A foreign or imported culture whose cross many people carry as a crest on their chest, but that is not idol worship. Soludo, ...
