University Of Maiduguri Marks 40th Anniversary 

Official celebration of university of Maiduguri at 40 will start in October later this year. The University (UNIMAID) is located in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria. The university was established by the federal government in 1975, and is among the second generation universities initiated by the then Mohammed/Obasanjo administration under the second national development plan as a pilot university in this part of the country.

One of the features of the University worth knowing is its capacity for effective academic research and development which makes it the centre for academic excellence in the entire region. Apart from research in agric and conflict resolution the institution also run programs, which include a college of medicine and functional teaching hospital, faculties of agriculture, arts, Dentistry, education, engineering, law, management science, Pharmacy, science, social science, and veterinary medicine.

With the commitment of the federal government, the university has recently increased its research efforts, particularly in the fields of agriculture and conflict resolution, and expanded the university press. The university had its own share of challenges like any other institution in the country; strikes, riots and cultist activities to name but a few. The institution however emerges stronger which is an indication of commitment, dedication and sacrifice by the management team comprising academic and non academic staff. the present administration of professor A.I Njodi stepped in when the activities of terrorist was at its peak; maiming, killings and destructions of life and property all over but that does not jeopardize teaching and learning.

The institution which currently has about 25,000 students across diverse programmed of the university .with a worldwide Alumni base, the university is presently excelling in every facet of endeavors. In the academic sphere, it has produced distinguished academics that rose up to the post of vice chancellors like the present and past V.C’s of Unimaid professor A.I Njodi and professor Mala daura; others are the V.C’s modibbo Adama university Yola(MAUTECH) Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi(A.T.B.U).In the political arena ,the institution has three elected governors waiting to take oath of office in their respective states ;Governor Kashim Shettima (Borno) Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger) And Dr.Okezie Ikpezu (Abia) states in addition to many distinguished National and state assembly members .

The 40th anniversary will mark a new era in the history of the institution. And very soon we would have to define the institution not by it growth as an emerging phenomenon but by what it is able to offer the African continent and the international Communities and join the ranks of world prestigious universities in the nearest future.
