INEC: JEGA under pressure, shifts elections to March 28, April 11

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has buckled under pressure from the security boss and therefore moved the 2015 general elections by six weeks.

INEC-Attahiru-Jega
National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki was the most elevated government official to propose a shift in the date a month ago before presidential associate Doyin Okupe affirmed same last Friday. Director of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega said at a public interview Saturday night that the Presidential and National Assembly decisions are currently rescheduled to happen on March 28, while that of governorship and state places of Assembly will now take place on April 11, based on the procurement of Section 26 (1) of the Electoral Act.‎

The commission’s choice to move the election took after arrangement of far reaching gatherings with the political party, Civil Society Organizations and also its Residents Electoral Commissioners at its office in Abuja. Following the time when the National Council of State’s gathering on Thursday, where INEC was tasked to go and counsel broadly and embrace a choice, the country had been tossed into nervousness and instability over the conceivable ramifications of the polls delay.
