Today makes it four years since the demise of Rashidi Yekini and Ooduarere.com recollects the Nigerian legend.  Born on the 23rd of October 1963, Yekini began his expert vocation with UNTL of Kaduna, before changing to Shooting Stars of Ibadan in 1982. He likewise played for Abiola Babes between 1984 to 1987, before moving to Africa Sports of Cote d’ Ivoire in 1987.

He would go ahead to feature for Vitória Setúbal, Olympiacos, Sporting Gijón, FC Zürich, Bizerte, Al-Shabab, Julius Berger and Gateway.

His 37 goals for Nigeria makes him the leading scorer in the historical backdrop of the Super Eagles till date. Those goals came in just 58 matches for the team.

He likewise scored Nigeria’s first ever World Cup goal in the 3-0 win over Bulgaria at the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

He represented Nigeria at three Africa Cup of Nations (’90, ’92, ’94), two World Cups (’94, ’98) and one Olympic Games (’88). He was likewise named the African footballer of the year 1993.

 

He kicked the bucket on May 4, 2012, after allegedly experiencing bipolar disorder.
