“Dancing in front of mosque not provocative, don’t apologise” – Prof. Wole Soyinka backs Davido

In the facial skin of fierce criticism from Muslims, Professor Wole Soyinka has defended award-winning celebrity musician Davido.

The famous author contributed his voice to the viral video of several incensed teenagers protesting against a music video that Davido endorsed since they felt it had been disrespectful to their religion on the streets of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

Soyinka provided justifications for why Davido shouldn’t apologise in a statement made public on Tuesday. He mentioned how Nasir El Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, had made disparaging remarks towards Christians before but had never been needed to apologize.

“There was nothing to apologize about, and that applied equally to El Rufai’s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I equally absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani, if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido ok behalf of the Muslim community” he noted.

The famous author also referenced moments from Whoopi Goldberg’s SISTER ACT and noticed that Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian scholar who was murdered by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto a year ago over allegations of blasphemy, wasn’t killed due to Davido’s music.

Nigerians should figure out how to discern between practitioners and the objects of the devotion, based on Soyinka.
