Festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics also seek to inform community Members of their traditions; the involvement of elders sharing stories and experiences provides a means for unity among the general public.
According to Ifadumoye Awotunde Ajanaku, the Araba of Lagos , number 149 out of 256 sacred Ifa chapters, ‘Ogunda Irete’ – is the holy Odu of Ifa that gave birth to ‘Eko’ – Lagos Island.
Babalawo Ajanaku is the sole custodian of the Ikin belonging to Lagos Island, the sacred palm nuts used by the Yoruba people of Southwest Nigeria during the ritual of Ifa divination. The Ikin are sacred, having been consecrated through an Ifa ritual ceremony.
These 16 sacred palm nuts were appeased during Ifa rituals performed by the High Priest of Ifa called ‘Araba’, who is the head man of the Babalawos, Oloriasas and all Yoruba traditional custodians.
