7. Courage is scarce.

I used to think that we had won much of the fight when people believed the proper things: freedom is important, people have rights, we should abide by the law, censorship is wrong, and bureaucrats shouldn’t rule outside of their purview. I didn’t fully comprehend that having the guts to follow through on convictions is much more uncommon than having convictions per se. In fact, it’s unclear that one’s beliefs really count if one has the guts to defend the truth at some expense to one’s image and financial security. Furthermore, such bravery is extremely uncommon. Fear of the unknown has the power to intimidate most individuals. I was unaware of this.
