The confirmation of National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed as a Minister of the Federal Republic, means he will have to step down in the coming days. However, while there are talks that the position may be retained in the Southwest in the principle of zoning, the party leadership is looking at respecting hierarchical structure.
If the latter is agreed upon, the incumbent Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, will replace Mohammed.
Frank, who hails from Bayelsa State, has been serving as Mohammed’s deputy since June 13,2014 when the APC constituted its National Working Committee (NWC). But a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, told Daily Independent, that some of the party leaders are not comfortable with the choice of Frank, a staunch ally of Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
Frank reportedly incurred the wrath of some leaders in the party due to some statements he made in the past. In June, Timi Frank publicly called for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, over the crisis that rocked the National Assembly due to leadership tussle.
He also wrote a letter to the Senate not to confirm the appointment of Babatunde Fowler as the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for assuming duty without being confirmed. Fowler, a candidate of a National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in August while the Senate was on recess.
Currently, some leaders lobbying President Buhari for the emergence of former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), Rotimi Fashakin, as new APC spokesman.
Others are putting in good words for Joe Igbokwe, Lagos State Publicity Secretary.
