Less of a human for promoting mother tongue – Ewo Orisa!

So ….
When I had my last baby, the pop man urged that she shouldn’t start school pretty early like her siblings.
We enrolled her last yr sept @2 yrs 8 months.
Normally, as a Yoruba woman, what language was I supposed to speak to my children, egbami ke,
A child never goes to school but Sept.
No be say dem speak English to my child she no ft respond or stuff.
Color me surprised, afternooon wey I wan carry my pikin alongside her siblings from school.
Madamu class teacher told me kpe, ” excuse me ma, she noticed that my daughter was speaking Yoruba, kpe infact, one parent came to pick her children, saw she was new, she was surprised kpe ner Yoruba she dey speak, that the parent made a remark kpe, ” as cute as this baby is, she is expressing herself in Yoruba.

I allowed her get done….
I’m sure the experience ,she would never forget in a hurry
First, I asked her, when we registered in your school, did you see anything, like McCarthy? Mcalmond, bin, Germany, Hillary, etc, in our names?
She said no…
I ask again, did I or did I not pay everything on the list you gave me? Am I owing your school shishi?
She answered no…
I asked again, Why do we enroll our children in school??
I asked her, what language do you expect me to communicate with in my home as a Yoruba woman???
Well, finally, I told her, if any parent finds delight and pride in the fact that their child/ren cannot speak their tongues, it’s definitely not me.
The essence of bringing them to school is to teach and instill to some extent, some discipline in them.
If it is French that you speak in your
You and the school will want her to communicate with, teach her, I won’t stop speaking my language to my child to meet whatever standards you’ve set, and I’ll appreciate if this topic never pops up again.
Teach her what you are paid for, and do not meddle in my way of raising my child/ren, hiding under the umbrella of schooling.
Do not also try to bully my child for speaking her mother’s tongue, ner beg i dey beg you.

You can tell from her countenance that when I was done, she was shocked at the feedback.

The child wey she dey talk say ner Yoruba she dey speak then, the way she commands English now pass comprehension, good a thing she manages both well.

Not in this life will anyone make my children see themselves as less of a human for promoting their tongues.
What’s sexy about a Yoruba child not being able to speak their mother’s tongue?
Language wey even white dey come naija come learn…
Ewo
