Niger accuses Chadian officers of backing failed coup attempt in Niamey

Following the mutiny and failed coup attempt in Niamey on 28 and 29 August, a Nigerien army officer said on state television that Chadian officers and associates of former president Mohamed Bazoum had supported the mutineers. He also alleged that reinforcements were expected to transit through Chad, deepening tensions between Niamey and N’Djamena.

The accusations come as relations between Niger’s junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby have been strained by armed group activity and shifting regional alliances. The claims were made public in remarks published by The Africa Report on 8 September 2026.
