Osun: Motherly Love

Yesterday was the peak of the Osun Osogbo festival, and it felt overwhelming.  The exciting bubbles were there as well. This may not be far from the fact that Arugba OSUNBUNMI, who couldn’t carry the sacred calabash last year because of its weight of it confidently carried it this year or because I watched her practice the carrying of calabash because of the access I have over the years and have gotten more closely in the last 1year.

Osun is the Òrìsà Olómo (The Mother of Children). She has overtime proven to have held her reputation, self esteem and track records in the highest regards and it is something you can visibly see everywhere.

While Osunbunmi was on the way to the grove, Olórí Òdó ( Aunty Bimbo) kept asking Osunbunmi if she’s fine and if there’s no trouble. She kept pointing the right walkway to her and kept telling her to walk gently. She danced when and where necessary. She was assisted but she carried the sacred calabash for the longest and the cheer in the crowd was loud and the prayers by residents were equally loud to motivate her

To me, that was what motherly love was about. That was what Osun was about.
