BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:00 A.M.) – Russia has offered Iraq their S-400 air defense system to protect their airspace, RIA Novosti reported this week, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense.

UPDATE: The Ukrainain side clarified the number of people killed. There were 168 passengers and 9 crew members.

All the sides involved in the January 8 escalation in Iraq provide conflicting reports on the results of the Iranian strike on US military facilities to avenge the United States’ assassination of its senior commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

On January 7th, NATO announced that it was withdrawing a part of its forces from Iraq. A spokesman for the trans-Atlantic military alliance said that “the safety of our personnel is paramount” and that some troops would be moved “both inside and outside of Iraq.”
