In the mid-hours of today, a man named Samuel Akibinu was granted an interview by the Punch Newspaper where he narrated how he spent five years in prison for what he was innocent about. Samuel Akibinu said, “A man I call my friend named Isaac Micheal came to my house on the 5th of July 2018 with a girl (Favour) he claimed to be his sister.
He asked me to help him house the young girl for some time. Favour started staying with me but there was a day she went to sell goods and never returned. Worried, I called on my friend (a neighbor) but he responded that I should not be bothered over her disappearance.” Speaking further, Samuel Akibinu said, “It was after Favour went missing that my friend told me they were not related. He said he only helped her through me because she needed accommodation.
“I told him we still need to look for her because I will be held accountable if people find her dead. While looking for her, I was told someone saw her at a shop in the Ijora axis of Lagos state.” Again, Mr. Samuel Akibinu said, “When I went there, I was told Favour still stole the money of the woman she was working for as she did while with me. After some weeks, a police officer came knocking on my door and I was made to appear at the station. While there, the case was twisted as the girl’s father came saying I had sexually molested his daughter. When I disagreed, the police head at the station asked us to settle it outside the station.”
In addition, the man said, “A test was conducted and it was realized that the girl was not assaulted. She was not deflowered as the father claimed. That was when favour’s father told me the girl’s real name was Ifeoma. The father asked me to pay seventy thousand Naira to die the case but I refused to.”
Lastly, the man said, “Some officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ikeja later picked interest in the case, got it twisted and it landed me in prison. I spent five years there. I thank God I was there because I became a better person. Some lawyers who offered pro-bono service helped in securing my release eventually.” What are your thoughts about this?
