On this day five years ago he died after an operation gone wrong. Sikiru Ayinde Balogun Aka Barrister, Alh. Agba, Barry-wonder et al was responsible for the metamorphosis of ‘Were’ into ‘Fuji’ a native Yoruba genre we all are proud of. He named it Fuji after he visited Japan where he saw a poster at the airport, advertising the Mount Fuji. The name Fuji emerged for the first time in his album titled Alayinde Nki yin, released around 1974. Born in 1948 to the Balogun family of Adakeja bi Esu compound, Ayeye, Ibadan. He started singing as a little boy, at ten, he was already leading a group of boys who sang to wake people up to observe their prayers during the Islamic month of Ramadan. He was fondly referred to as “Alhaji Agba” being the oldest Fuji musician. Others referred to him as “Mr. Fuji” in recognition of his status as the originator of the Fuji brand of music. He left behind a vacuum yet to be filled in the Fuji genre of Yorubaland.
