Katrina Esau: Guardian of the N|uu Tongue

Among the sands of the Northern Cape, where the San people have walked for over 20,000 years, a voice still carries one of humanity’s oldest languages — N|uu. Once spoken widely, today it trembles on the edge of silence, with only a handful of fluent speakers left.

Yet, at 90 years old, Katrina Esau, affectionately known as Ouma Katrina, has refused to let this treasure vanish into history. From her modest home, she opens her doors to children, teaching them the sacred sounds and rhythms of N|uu. She has even gifted the world the first N|uu children’s book! Qhoi n|a Tjhoi, planting seeds of memory for generations to come.

Every word she preserves is more than speech — it is the heartbeat of the San, a living archive of survival, knowledge of the land, and the spiritual connection between people and nature. In her resilience, we witness that languages are not just communication; they are ancestral fire, carried forward by those bold enough to protect them.
Through Ouma Katrina, N|uu continues to breathe. And as long as it is spoken, the world remembers that Africa is not only the cradle of humanity, but also the keeper of its oldest voices.
