Leader Goodluck Jonathan revealed plans to institute a National Policy On Ageing. The announcement was made by the Minister of Women Affairs & Social Development Hajiya Zainab Maina at the opening of a two-Day National Summit on Ageing & Older Persons. The conference was organized by her ministry in collaboration with Dave Omokaro Foundation and other stakeholders, marking this year’s International Day of Older Persons.
The ministry will commence updating the National Policy on Ageing and Social Welfare to be able to map out an appropriate national framework for care of older persons in Nigeria. The minister noted poor health and income insecurity were the maximum challenges faced by older Nigerians. She said,
“Their sacrifice, wisdom and experiences have remained and continue to be the pillars of support and stability in our nation. They should enjoy a life of rest, comfort, security and active participation in the economic, cultural and political life of their communities.”
