Full Update: Türkiye’s Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 5,895 as Injured Tally Hits 34,810

Early on Monday, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude on the Richter scale struck south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria. Another 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred a few hours later.

The death toll from Monday’s earthquake in Turkey has risen to 3,549, with more than 20,000 injured, a Turkish news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Turkish disaster and emergency management authority (AFAD).

The European Union sent rescuers to Turkey, responding to its request to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Russia also sent teams to assist Turkey and instructed its troops to help the Syrian authorities as well. A number of other countries have also voiced their eagerness to provide assistance if necessary.

On Monday, Syria appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to mobilize all resources available to help the war-stricken country deal with the deadly catastrophe.

Russian Military in Syria Rescued 42 People From Under Rubble After Earthquake

The Russian servicemen continue rescue work in Syria after the devastating earthquake, having saved 42 people and having found another 57 people dead; almost 200 residents received medical assistance, Maj. Gen. Oleg Egorov, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in Syria, said at a briefing.

“In the course of rescue operations, with the involvement of military personnel of the Russian Armed Forces, 42 people were rescued from under rubble, 57 bodies of those dead were removed, medical assistance was provided to 194 residents,” Egorov said at a briefing.

Egyptian President Expresses Condolences to Assad in Connection With Earthquake

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi expressed condolences to Syrian President Bashar Assad in connection with the disastrous earthquake, the Egyptian president’s office said on Tuesday.

“President El-Sisi expressed his sincere condolences over the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit the country yesterday, wishing the injured a quick recovery,” the statement said.

UNESCO Says Its Experts to Assess Damage to Affected Heritage Sites in Syria, Turkey

UNESCO will invite its experts to assess the damage caused to the historical fortress of Gaziantep in Turkey and the citadel of Aleppo in Syria as a result of the earthquake, the organization’s spokesman, Thomas Mallard said.

The historic Gaziantep Castle in Turkey and the Aleppo citadel in Syria, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, were hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on Monday morning.

“UNESCO will engage its experts, together with its partners, such as ICOMOS [International Council on Monuments and Sites] to compile an accurate damage assessment in order to quickly protect and stabilize these sites,” Mallard said.

UNESCO is particularly concerned about the state of the Syrian city of Aleppo after the earthquake, as the citadel there has significant damage.

“The organization has carried out with its partners an initial assessment of heritage damage. In Syria, UNESCO is particularly concerned about the condition of the ancient city of Aleppo, which is on the List of World Heritage and is under threat. Significant damage is observed in the citadel,” Mallard added.

He noted that the western tower in the old part of the city had collapsed and there were several buildings whose structures had been damaged and weakened.
